Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring a conversation on the Re-Connect Westside initiative, with Selina Zapata Bur, planning manager, Kansas City Public Works, and Josh Boehm, project manager with WSP, an engineering and urban planning firm.

Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show’s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community’s health and wellbeing.

The project to Reconnect the Westside is a city-led initiative focused on restoring connections within the Westside neighborhood addressing historic challenges caused by the construction of I-35 and I-670. The project works in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Transportation and uses a $1 million grant for this Planning and Environmental Linkages Study.

The initiative, Selina and Josh say, prioritizes listening to the community and engaging community members in the planning. The Westside neighborhood was made up of 14,000 residents in the 1940s, when the interstate freeways were initially built; the neighborhood now contains about 3,300 people. The interstate caused the displacement of homes and businesses, while creating a physical barrier with noise and air quality issues.

The project was launched with the bipartisan infrastructure law that acknowledged impacts of interstate development. Josh said the city recognized an opportunity to correct the harm and improve safety and efficiency. With the highways now aging, there will be requirements for state investment – and this project can give the community a voice in those coming investments.

“This is a very community-driven process, and that’s what it’s intended to be,” said Selina. “This is about the community and making the quality of life better for the West side, connecting the neighborhood.”

In community engagement sessions, the discussions are targeted to explore three broad options: should the interstate highways remain the same, be realigned or removed entirely.

  • Remain: What can be done to connect if the highways remain as they are? Consider enhancing and developing viaduct space, ways to connect blocks without street access and open up Penn Valley Park to the West side.
  • Realign: Based on idea that I-35 could be realigned to a different location, for example, to the west lots where rail infrastructure is dominant. This option would require federal and state funding and would have significant regional impact.
  • Remove or possibly Reroute: Starts with the idea to tear down the interstate, and perhaps provide local access parkways in its place.

Josh and Selina announced the upcoming  community session at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Mattie Rhodes Community Center. They also discussed the separate project examining reconnecting the East side, which will be the subject of a separate discussion on One on One with Swope Health.

Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring a conversation with Janet Miles Bartee, president and CEO of LINC (Local Investment Commission)

Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show’s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community’s health and wellbeing.

Ms. Bartee explains the role of LINC in the community – a non-profit organization that works with state and local government, businesses, community and civic leaders to improve the lives of children and families in the Kansas City region. She describes her career journey with LINC, starting as a part-time afterschool teacher, then a site coordinator, supervisor, manager, and vice president before taking the top positions.

LINC, she said, is best described as a hub of caring, providing for the needs of the people in the community. The organization provides caring communities for students, emergency food distribution, early childhood support, employment and job training, financial counseling, elder care, home repairs, neighborhood development, community organizing and much more. LINC serves more than 7,000 children a day in free programs.

LINC is most known for its before- and after-school programs, serving seven school districts and 54 schools. “We serve the whole child, whatever it takes for a child to be successful in school – clothes, food, utility assistance,” she said.

“LINC is whatever the community needs,” she said. LINC provided COVID-19 vaccinations and emergency food during the pandemic, while also making home visits, providing computers and internet hotspots to help students with the sudden shift to online learning.  “We pride ourselves on being there for whatever the community needs.”

The pandemic, she said, helped LINC focus on its core mission: serving community, with whatever the need is. The agency distributed $4.5 million in rental and utility assistance during the pandemic.

LINC acts with compassion, she said. “For me, it is helping people become successful and remain successful,” she said. “No matter what we do, there has to be a component on building stability.” Relationships with families are key.

Pending budget cuts from federal and state programs, however, might limit LINC’s ability to expand and serve more of the community. For the first time, LINC has hired a developer to build support with foundations, the city, the county, and individual donors to fill the gaps from federal budget cuts.

What’s missing? “We need to invest in people. We don’t do enough to invest enough in people. We’re not just giving handouts, we are investing in people.”

“So many of our children are suffering,” she said, noting that many children with unstable housing move from school to school. LINC staffers, in distinctive blue shirts are one constant presence in their lives. School programs also address gun violence, conflict resolution, building relationships and character, caring for each other. “We teach them how to be their brother’s keeper, to understand we are responsible for each other,” she said.

Another bright spot in the LINC portfolio is the Palestine Senior Center, 3325 Prospect Ave., where membership has grown from 65 during COVID days to more than 400 now. The activity center provides meals, classes, fitness programs, healthcare and additional resources. Seniors spend time playing dominoes and cards, line dancing, really enjoying themselves while building relationships and community.

KANSAS CITY, MO (April 2, 2025) – Swope Health, the Kansas City region’s largest federally qualified health center, is pleased to announce the completion of its newest unit in a growing fleet of mobile clinics. A children’s mobile dental unit, purchased with funds donated from Resurrection, will be unveiled and dedicated in a special ceremony on Thursday, April 3, noon, at Swope Health Central (3801 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64130). The event is open to the public.

Funds for the custom-built mobile clinic, estimated at $500,000, were raised during Resurrection’s 2023 Candlelight Christmas Eve Offering. The unit’s dental operatory includes two treatment chairs and took 15 months to complete. Swope Health will use the clinic to further expand access to children’s dental care at community and school-based sites. Through mobile dental services, the Swope Health mobile dental unit team serves more than 3,000 children annually in collaboration with 85 Kansas and Missouri organizations.

“It is gratifying for Swope Health to align with those who use their impact and influence for social good,” said Jeron Ravin, JD, President and CEO of Swope Health. “Resurrection has been a pillar of good works for many years, and it is our privilege to be a benefactor of their giving and commitment to community. The generosity of their congregation allows us to advance and expand the work that remains at the heart of our mission: providing quality, accessible, comprehensive care for all.”

Since 2009, Resurrection has gifted nearly $23 million through their annual tradition of donating the entire Candlelight Christmas Eve Offering to fund Kansas City-based projects and global initiatives and intentionally selects organizations and programs that are purposed to transform the lives of children and families.

“Resurrection is excited to partner with Swope Health to help meet the need for children’s dental care in our community.” said Reverend Adam Hamilton, Senior Pastor of Resurrection. “I am humbled by and grateful for the commitment and generosity of our congregation. This is just one of the ways we are living our vision to help close the gaps and provide a future with hope for all children in our community.”

The special dedication service at Swope Health on Thursday, April 3, begins at noon and will include remarks by Swope Health and Resurrection leadership. In addition, the Mobile Dental Clinic will be on display at Resurrection Leawood (5001 W 137th Street, Leawood, KS) after worship services on Sunday, April 6. Service times are 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 5 p.m. The community and media are invited to attend Thursday’s and Sunday’s services.

Swope Health, in partnership with Kansas City Kansas Community College, and Community America Credit Union is building a five-story, approximately 95,000 square foot Community Education, Health and Wellness Center in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, at 7th Street and State Avenue.  This project represents an investment of over $55 million in downtown KCK.  Swope Health will open a Women’s and Children’s Center on the entire fifth floor in approximately 16,500 square of space.  Services will include women’s care, pediatrics, dental care, radiology, mental healthcare and supportive programming, such as prenatal group classes.  It is estimated that the new clinic will serve up to 6,000 patients annually.

Swope Health has partnered with the Kansas City Zoo to feature a zoological theme throughout the floor and promote the Zoo’s mission of education and conservation within the community.  The theming will be realized through two different approaches within the Women’s and Children’s Center.

1. Within the children’s portion of the public waiting room and within the Children’s Clinic, the project will utilize large scale environmental graphics to be applied via vinyl wall coverings to wall surfaces prepared by others. Printing and installation of the vinyl wall graphics will be provided by others through McCown Gordon’s construction contract.

2. Within the Women’s Clinic and at the Dental Exam Rooms within the Children’s Clinic, framed art photography and fine art will be used to reinforce the zoological theme of the floor.

It is intended to utilize graphic artwork and art photography in a fun and playful, but sophisticated way within the Children’s Clinic to create an animal themed environment and reinforce the partnership with the Kansas City Zoo.  The graphic artwork should not be of a “childish” or “cartooned” style, but should have a fun and sophisticated feel, celebrating interesting and engaging aspects of the animal kingdom in alignment with the Kansas City Zoo’s mission of education and conservation.  The large mural in the children’s waiting room is intended to represent a map of the Kansas City Zoo and provide a “seek-and-find” opportunity for children, both within the mural itself and to also reference other animals represented throughout the rest of the clinic.

It is intended for Women’s Clinic to utilize framed art work to reinforce the zoological theme in a refined and mature way that will differentiate the Women’s Clinic from the Children’s Clinic.  These two areas of the Center should have a different character and feel.

Desired Services:  Graphic Design & Art Curation – we seek an up-and-coming graphic designer and art curator to use inspiration from the Zoo to create original graphics including a primary wall mural in the main lobby, framed art, and wall murals and individual graphics for hallways and exam rooms.  The graphic designer and art curator will work closely with Swope Health, the architecture firm, PGAV, and the construction manager, McCownGordon.

Partners providing qualifications in response to this RFQ may pursue one or both categories of work including graphic design and/or art curation.  Submissions must clearly identify the services that are being proposed.

Deliverables – Environmental Graphics:  original artwork in a digital format that is acceptable to the Owner, of the resolution required to print at the intended scales.  Artwork will be printed and installed by others.

Deliverables – Art Curation:  selected partner will curate art photography and animal themed art work for review and final selection by the Owner.  The selected art curator will arrange for and facilitate purchase of the artwork by the Owner and will have the artwork framed (framing and mats to be reviewed and approved by the Owner), and will also provide for final installation in the Women’s and Children’s Center.

About Swope Health:  Swope Health is the Kansas City region’s largest community health center, serving over 54,000 patients annually in Missouri and Kansas.  With a mission to offer our patients care that is accessible, comprehensive and highest quality, we offer primary care, women’s care, dental, mental health, pharmacy, lab, radiology and other services.  Please visit SwopeHealth.org for more information.

Project requirements:

  • Original graphics using the Kansas City Zoo and the animal kingdom as inspiration (animals of all species, nature scenes, Zoo attractions, etc.)
  • Providing multiple graphics for different areas of the clinic
  • A “seek and find” or “Where’s Waldo?” type of design for the main lobby
  • Hallway graphics
  • Creative graphics in the Children’s Clinic, such as a height or weight chart using animals.
  • Art work that would also be suitable for framing
  • Works that are cohesive and complementary, to create an environment that is comfortable and inviting – prefer to avoid looks that would be heavily influenced by cartoons, anime or graffiti (as an example in the Children’s Dentistry Exam Rooms highlighting animals with unique or interesting teeth, or photography that highlights animal teeth in a fun or interesting way)
  • An artist’s statement to display in clinic
  • Attending the RFQ Virtual Workshop/Pre-proposal Meeting, or watching the recording, which will include detailed information
  • Attend a virtual interview if selected as a top candidate

Payment information:  Swope Health will pay professional graphic design rates, we will agree upon payment and terms before the project starts.

These renderings are concepts created by the architecture firm, to show some of the areas in the Center that will feature Zoo graphics.

The main lobby will include a train cutout, representing the Kansas City Zoo Railroad.  We’d like the Kansas City Zoo logo to also appear on this wall.

The lobby will be roughly divided by furniture to create distinct spaces for children and adults.  This rendering shows the train wall from a different perspective.

This image is not intended for literal interpretation, but acknowledges the incorporation of animal footprints can be an educational opportunity.

This image does not represent stylistic preference.  But rather the idea of a larger animal focused landscape mural in the corridor of the Children’s Clinic at pediatric exam rooms.

These renderings show how we’d like to have graphics in the hallways.  We like the animal height chart idea as shown for the pediatric clinic.

This rendering shows the stylistic preference and an idea for highlighting teeth in the animal kingdom at the Children’s Dental Exam Rooms.

Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring Ebony Reed, journalist and media executive, and also a bestselling author of Fifteen Cents on the Dollar: How Americans Made the Black-White Wealth Gap.

Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show’s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community’s health and wellbeing.

In this wide-ranging conversation, Ebony describes her childhood in a “family of communicators” and how journalism and communications are an essential part of her. After receiving her degrees in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, she went on to work for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Detroit News, the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal.

She began visiting Kansas City In 2016, with her fiancé Terez A. Paylor, a sports journalist covering the NFL. She moved to Kansas City in 2020.

Ebony described the genesis of the book as a series of conversations with her co-author Louise Story, beginning in the days after the murder of George Floyd. The conversations expanded to the economic crisis of 2008-9 and its impact on Black families. In the course of their discussions, they realized there wasn’t detailed reporting on the economic impact to Black families, explaining the origins of the Black-White wealth gap from slavery, redlining, and economic policies through to the contemporary lives of Black families today.

The book takes its name from the fact that a typical Black family has 15 cents in wealth for every $1 a typical White family has.

Ebony and her co-author have also taught a course at the Yale School of Management on Money and Race, which also addresses income gaps between races and between men and women. Since the book was published in early 2024, Ebony has been traveling the nation holding workshops and giving presentations to help people understand the Black-White wealth gap.

She notes that people tend to greatly underestimate the Black-White wealth gap, and are shocked to learn the truth revealed by the data.

The book is a collection of people’s histories, family trees, and stories as well as data, wrapped in a narrative style.

“The beginning of the Black-White wealth gap is slavery in our country,” she said. “That is people working and not being compensated; then you have hundreds of years of laws and private actions that attacked Black peoples’ ability to create wealth.” She cited examples like the G.I. Bill, which was set up to support all veterans but routinely denied benefits to Black veterans.

Today, the No. 1 driver of the wealth gap in our country is inheritance, she noted. White families frequently can provide gifts to cover downpayments on a home, or college education, or to address obstacles. She adds that bankruptcy policy holds the gap in place – noting Black families are less likely to have debts forgiven than Whites. The discussion touches on many complicated issues surrounding Black wealth, including home ownership, financial literacy, inequitable incomes, and notes the impacts of these issues on Black health and longevity.

In addition to her work as an author and journalist, Ebony serves as the chief strategy officer for The Marshall Project, a national non-profit and nonpartisan news organization that seeks to create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system. She also serves on the board of United WE. Earlier this year, Ebony appeared with Swope Health CEO Jeron Ravin at a town hall discussing the Black-White wealth gap.

Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring Ruth Ramsey, editor and publisher of Our Health Matters.

Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show’s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community’s health and wellbeing.

Ramsey, who is also president of Ramsey & Associates Design Inc., is sponsoring an event “Mentor me! I can & I will” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Gem Theater, 1615 E. 18th St., Kansas City. The event is a call to action for Black men to make a commitment to mentor and support Black boys.

It also is a follow-up to the November 2022 “Black Men Speak: Health, Strength, and Hope” event and special edition magazine. The magazine focused on Black men, reaffirming their value and purpose and encouraging a deeper understanding of their important contributions.

She explained the title as a call and response: “Mentor me” as a request from Black boys, “I can and I will” as the response from Black men. She also noted a dire need for Black males to serve in mentoring roles.

Her goal is to show men that they are needed and convince them they have something to contribute. Ramsey features several boys in the magazine, both who were mentored and who mentor others. “It does make a difference,” she said.
