Kansas City, Mo. (May 19) – Swope Health, a leading provider of community health in the Kansas City region, announces Governor Laura Kelly as the inaugural honoree of the Dr. Dhana Rengachary Excellence in Healthcare Award. Governor Kelly will be recognized at Swope Health’s Honoring Women in Healthcare luncheon on Wednesday, May 21, 11:30 a.m., at Grand Street Café (4740 Grand Ave., Kansas City, MO). The award, named in honor of Dr. Dhana Rengachary, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist whose career at Swope Health spanned more than 50 years, will be presented to Governor Kelly in person at the luncheon.

Award-winning Kansas City-based journalist Cynthia Newsome will emcee the event and lead a conversation with nationally renowned physician, health equity activist, and author Uché Blackstock, M.D., who recently penned “Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine,” a New York Times bestseller.

Throughout her time in office, Governor Kelly has prioritized investing in crucial healthcare programs to ensure all Kansans have access to affordable, high-quality care. She has fought to protect and expand Medicaid, extended Medicaid postpartum coverage for new moms from two to 12 months, created the statewide 9-8-8 suicide prevention and crisis hotline, and signed a bill that laid the groundwork for the most significant transformation of the Kansas community mental health system in decades.

Blackstock, a second-generation Harvard-trained physician and founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, works with organizations throughout the nation to dismantle racism in healthcare. During the event, she will discuss insights from her book and will focus on current opportunities and challenges in health equity.

“I am surrounded by excellence in healthcare every day,” said Swope Health President and CEO Jeron Ravin, J.D. “Women continue to mold the future of healthcare leadership, and that is true at Swope Health; there are many women who hold prominent positions at our health center—including seven on our executive team. Recognizing the brilliance and compassion of additional women leaders who are leading the way toward transformational change in healthcare seems a natural extension of our legacy and the most appropriate way to champion their work while garnering support for our own.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit Swope Health’s medical assistant training program.

KANSAS CITY, MO (April 2, 2025) – Swope Health, the Kansas City region’s largest federally qualified health center, is pleased to announce the completion of its newest unit in a growing fleet of mobile clinics. A children’s mobile dental unit, purchased with funds donated from Resurrection, will be unveiled and dedicated in a special ceremony on Thursday, April 3, noon, at Swope Health Central (3801 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64130). The event is open to the public.

Funds for the custom-built mobile clinic, estimated at $500,000, were raised during Resurrection’s 2023 Candlelight Christmas Eve Offering. The unit’s dental operatory includes two treatment chairs and took 15 months to complete. Swope Health will use the clinic to further expand access to children’s dental care at community and school-based sites. Through mobile dental services, the Swope Health mobile dental unit team serves more than 3,000 children annually in collaboration with 85 Kansas and Missouri organizations.

“It is gratifying for Swope Health to align with those who use their impact and influence for social good,” said Jeron Ravin, JD, President and CEO of Swope Health. “Resurrection has been a pillar of good works for many years, and it is our privilege to be a benefactor of their giving and commitment to community. The generosity of their congregation allows us to advance and expand the work that remains at the heart of our mission: providing quality, accessible, comprehensive care for all.”

Since 2009, Resurrection has gifted nearly $23 million through their annual tradition of donating the entire Candlelight Christmas Eve Offering to fund Kansas City-based projects and global initiatives and intentionally selects organizations and programs that are purposed to transform the lives of children and families.

“Resurrection is excited to partner with Swope Health to help meet the need for children’s dental care in our community.” said Reverend Adam Hamilton, Senior Pastor of Resurrection. “I am humbled by and grateful for the commitment and generosity of our congregation. This is just one of the ways we are living our vision to help close the gaps and provide a future with hope for all children in our community.”

The special dedication service at Swope Health on Thursday, April 3, begins at noon and will include remarks by Swope Health and Resurrection leadership. In addition, the Mobile Dental Clinic will be on display at Resurrection Leawood (5001 W 137th Street, Leawood, KS) after worship services on Sunday, April 6. Service times are 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 5 p.m. The community and media are invited to attend Thursday’s and Sunday’s services.

PACE, an acronym for Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, is a national program implemented by 180 organizations across the United States that offers a full range of health and wellness services for people age 55 and older. At PACE KC, older adults have access to primary care, physical and occupational therapies, nutritional and social support, life enrichment activities, nursing care, and much more. Amenities at the PACE KC Adult Wellness Center including a computer lab, library, arts and crafts room, bathing suite, low-stimulation memory care area, outdoor recreation space, and meeting spaces.

“The PACE model continually produces better outcomes than traditional alternatives, including reduced hospitalizations, fewer emergency room visits, and lower rates of rehospitalization,” said Heath Rath, Executive Director of PACE KC. “Our 11-member interdisciplinary care team collaborates on behalf of each participant to provide comprehensive, whole-person care. This tailored, participant-centered approach makes all the difference in enabling them to age gracefully in the homes and communities they love.”
Those receiving services also attest to the impact of the personalized care they receive.

“Over the last year, Swope Health has had the unique privilege of introducing the PACE model of care to Jackson County through PACE KC. It remains the national gold standard for medically frail older adults who, without PACE, would be confined to nursing homes and other places of institutional care,” said Jeron Ravin, JD., President and CEO of Swope Health. “At PACE KC, we’ve seen our participants gain mobility, confidence and build community. We know this model of care transforms lives because we see it every day. We also believe it is poised to begin a much-needed transformation of senior care in Kansas City.”

Kansas City, MO (Feb. 28) – Swope Health is excited to announce the grand opening of 87th Street Place, an 8-bed residential facility in South Kansas City. This newest location, purpose-built to serve those with co-occurring mental illness and developmental disabilities, is the first of its kind for the health center.

Located at 6412 E. 87th Street, Kansas City, MO, close to Swope Health KidsCARE Tenney Pediatrics, and Swope Health Hickman Mills, 87th Street Place is a referral-based location staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by experienced Behavioral Health clinicians who assist residents with healthcare maintenance, nutritional needs, life skill strategies, and building community with one another. As Swope Health’s third clinic to open in the area since 2022, 87th Street Place represents a significant capital investment in the Hickman Mills community and creates a healthcare hub for residents in the area.

According to research, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) have higher incidences of mental health conditions and behavioral support needs than those without IDDs, but are less likely to receive care from community providers. They are also more likely to seek emergency room care and be hospitalized for mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. Within the new facility, Swope Health intends to make whole person care more accessible to those with co-occurring behavioral health and developmental needs, as they are often an underserved population within the landscape of community mental health.

“As a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center, Swope Health has the privilege and the responsibility to remove barriers to mental healthcare,” said Swope Health President and CEO Jeron L. Ravin, JD. “87th Street Place is another investment in the community we are proud to serve and provides further evidence of our listening to the needs of the people and responding accordingly.”

Community members, patients, and media are invited to attend the ribbon cutting event on Friday, March 14, beginning at 2 p.m. Remarks will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by a tour of the clinic. For more information about the event, the services offered at Swope Health, or to arrange an interview with Swope Health leadership, please contact Bridget Locke, director of strategic communications, at blocke@swopehealth.org or 816-830-2494. Please RSVP for the event at RSVP@swopehealth.org.

Swope Health, in partnership with Kansas City Kansas Community College, and Community America Credit Union is building a five-story, approximately 95,000 square foot Community Education, Health and Wellness Center in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, at 7th Street and State Avenue.  This project represents an investment of over $55 million in downtown KCK.  Swope Health will open a Women’s and Children’s Center on the entire fifth floor in approximately 16,500 square of space.  Services will include women’s care, pediatrics, dental care, radiology, mental healthcare and supportive programming, such as prenatal group classes.  It is estimated that the new clinic will serve up to 6,000 patients annually.

Swope Health has partnered with the Kansas City Zoo to feature a zoological theme throughout the floor and promote the Zoo’s mission of education and conservation within the community.  The theming will be realized through two different approaches within the Women’s and Children’s Center.

1. Within the children’s portion of the public waiting room and within the Children’s Clinic, the project will utilize large scale environmental graphics to be applied via vinyl wall coverings to wall surfaces prepared by others. Printing and installation of the vinyl wall graphics will be provided by others through McCown Gordon’s construction contract.

2. Within the Women’s Clinic and at the Dental Exam Rooms within the Children’s Clinic, framed art photography and fine art will be used to reinforce the zoological theme of the floor.

It is intended to utilize graphic artwork and art photography in a fun and playful, but sophisticated way within the Children’s Clinic to create an animal themed environment and reinforce the partnership with the Kansas City Zoo.  The graphic artwork should not be of a “childish” or “cartooned” style, but should have a fun and sophisticated feel, celebrating interesting and engaging aspects of the animal kingdom in alignment with the Kansas City Zoo’s mission of education and conservation.  The large mural in the children’s waiting room is intended to represent a map of the Kansas City Zoo and provide a “seek-and-find” opportunity for children, both within the mural itself and to also reference other animals represented throughout the rest of the clinic.

It is intended for Women’s Clinic to utilize framed art work to reinforce the zoological theme in a refined and mature way that will differentiate the Women’s Clinic from the Children’s Clinic.  These two areas of the Center should have a different character and feel.

Desired Services:  Graphic Design & Art Curation – we seek an up-and-coming graphic designer and art curator to use inspiration from the Zoo to create original graphics including a primary wall mural in the main lobby, framed art, and wall murals and individual graphics for hallways and exam rooms.  The graphic designer and art curator will work closely with Swope Health, the architecture firm, PGAV, and the construction manager, McCownGordon.

Partners providing qualifications in response to this RFQ may pursue one or both categories of work including graphic design and/or art curation.  Submissions must clearly identify the services that are being proposed.

Deliverables – Environmental Graphics:  original artwork in a digital format that is acceptable to the Owner, of the resolution required to print at the intended scales.  Artwork will be printed and installed by others.

Deliverables – Art Curation:  selected partner will curate art photography and animal themed art work for review and final selection by the Owner.  The selected art curator will arrange for and facilitate purchase of the artwork by the Owner and will have the artwork framed (framing and mats to be reviewed and approved by the Owner), and will also provide for final installation in the Women’s and Children’s Center.

About Swope Health:  Swope Health is the Kansas City region’s largest community health center, serving over 54,000 patients annually in Missouri and Kansas.  With a mission to offer our patients care that is accessible, comprehensive and highest quality, we offer primary care, women’s care, dental, mental health, pharmacy, lab, radiology and other services.  Please visit SwopeHealth.org for more information.

Project requirements:

  • Original graphics using the Kansas City Zoo and the animal kingdom as inspiration (animals of all species, nature scenes, Zoo attractions, etc.)
  • Providing multiple graphics for different areas of the clinic
  • A “seek and find” or “Where’s Waldo?” type of design for the main lobby
  • Hallway graphics
  • Creative graphics in the Children’s Clinic, such as a height or weight chart using animals.
  • Art work that would also be suitable for framing
  • Works that are cohesive and complementary, to create an environment that is comfortable and inviting – prefer to avoid looks that would be heavily influenced by cartoons, anime or graffiti (as an example in the Children’s Dentistry Exam Rooms highlighting animals with unique or interesting teeth, or photography that highlights animal teeth in a fun or interesting way)
  • An artist’s statement to display in clinic
  • Attending the RFQ Virtual Workshop/Pre-proposal Meeting, or watching the recording, which will include detailed information
  • Attend a virtual interview if selected as a top candidate

Payment information:  Swope Health will pay professional graphic design rates, we will agree upon payment and terms before the project starts.

These renderings are concepts created by the architecture firm, to show some of the areas in the Center that will feature Zoo graphics.

The main lobby will include a train cutout, representing the Kansas City Zoo Railroad.  We’d like the Kansas City Zoo logo to also appear on this wall.

The lobby will be roughly divided by furniture to create distinct spaces for children and adults.  This rendering shows the train wall from a different perspective.

This image is not intended for literal interpretation, but acknowledges the incorporation of animal footprints can be an educational opportunity.

This image does not represent stylistic preference.  But rather the idea of a larger animal focused landscape mural in the corridor of the Children’s Clinic at pediatric exam rooms.

These renderings show how we’d like to have graphics in the hallways.  We like the animal height chart idea as shown for the pediatric clinic.

This rendering shows the stylistic preference and an idea for highlighting teeth in the animal kingdom at the Children’s Dental Exam Rooms.

KANSAS CITY, MO, May 30, 2024 – Swope Health, a leading provider of comprehensive healthcare services in the Kansas City metro area, announces the construction of a new 12-acre multi-phased campus called Swope Health Village. This project turns the 5900 block of Swope Parkway into a modern residential campus offering affordable housing, supportive healthcare services, mental health services, geriatric and aging services, community gardens, and a community center. Swope Health Village is aspiring to be the State of Missouri’s first purpose-built community, intentionally designed to address health and well-being, reducing health and socioeconomic disparities.

Swope Ridge Geriatric Center, which closed in early 2022, served older adults for 65 years on the planned new Swope Health Village site. Swope Health re-imagines the 12-acre site and adjacent parcels into a campus that will foster social interaction through indoor and outdoor spaces for neighborhood and community events, classes, physical activities, and family playtime. In support of the project, the City of Kansas City has announced an appropriation of up to $5 million for the development of the project.

“Every Kansas Citian deserves access to resources, amenities and neighborhoods that prioritize health, wellness and an improved quality of life,” said Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, who represents the 5th City Council District of Kansas City. “I am proud of the work that Swope Health has done and will continue doing through this development to impact more favorable outcomes related to the social drivers of health. The City of Kansas City is eager to support and partner with them in this work.”

Swope Health Village includes plans for 200 units of senior affordable housing and 75 units of mental health housing supported by comprehensive mental health services. Fifteen apartments will support participants in Swope Health’s Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE KC). The project will include an extension of the Kansas City Health Department and 10 additional beds for substance abuse treatment in collaboration with the Kansas City court system, in addition to office and retail space, including a new Kansas City Health Department office.  As a purpose-built community, the project addresses the need for affordable, quality housing units in the neighborhood, and strengthens the neighborhood through a design that brings people together through healthy living.

Further, the purpose-built community is poised to become a driver of economic growth in the region, through capital investment and job creation. The projected investment of $100 million into facilities and services, along with 80 to 90 new quality jobs created in construction and dozens in healthcare, will represent one of the largest East Side investments in decades.

Demolition of the existing structures on the site began in January 2024, and construction of Swope Health Village will begin in early 2025. Swope Health is partnering with architectural firms Perkins Eastman, HFG Architecture and Moody Nolan for master planning and design support of the campus and residential structures. McCownGordon Construction is the general contractor. Swope Health plans to work with a developer for future phases.

In addition to support from the City of Kansas City, Swope Health has received a $7.5 million American Rescue Plan Act-funded capital improvement allocation from the State of Missouri. The health center will launch a capital campaign to raise the additional funds for construction and program activation.

“We are extremely grateful for the City’s vote of confidence in Swope Health Village,” said Swope Health President and CEO Jeron Ravin, J.D. “We have served this neighborhood for 55 years and will continue to honor our strong connections by being wise stewards of these investments. In all that we do, we remain steadfastly committed to the cause of health equity and access for everyone.”
