2021 Ferst Annual Lewis Grizzard & Catfish Bike Ride

Please consider joining Marie and me for the 2021 Coweta Ferst Lewis Grizzard & Catfish Bike Ride in Moreland, Georgia.  This event will take place on October 3, 2021 at 8:00am starting at the Old Morland Mill in Moreland, GA.  There are 12 mile, 25 mile and 66 mile options to choose from. You can register in advance at: Lewis Grizzard & Catfish Bike Ride.

The Coweta Ferst Foundation is dedicated to providing age-appropriate books for every child under the age of five in Coweta County.  This mission is important because:

  1. Sixty-one percent of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home;
  2. One-third of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn; and,
  3. Seventy-five percent of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school.

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader.  However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home. Each registration will enable Coweta Ferst to send an age-appropriate book to a child each month for a year.

If you cannot ride, you can still support this very important and worthy cause by becoming a Lewis Grizzard & Catfish Bike Ride Sponsor. We hope to see you there!

Coweta Samaritan Clinic’s 11th Annual Bluegrass and Barbecue

One event we never miss is the Coweta Samaritan Clinic’s annual fundraiser.  So, put on your jeans and boots and join us for the 11th Annual Bluegrass & Barbecue on Sunday, October 3, 2021 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm in the parking lot behind Dunc’s BBQ Kitchen (98 Jackson St., Newnan)! This event will feature barbecue from Dunc’s BBQ Kitchen, great bluegrass music, and lots of fun! Marie and I are long time sponsors of this event and more importantly supporters of the exceptional work done by Samaritan Clinic.

This free clinic serves the medical needs of those citizens 19 year of age or older who live in Coweta County, have household incomes 200% below the federal poverty level and have no access to any medical insurance.

Coweta Samaritan Clinic began treating patients in October 2011. Since then the clinic’s has provided care for over 1,600 individual patients through over 22,000 patient visits. In 2020, despite Covid-19 the clinic had 486 individual patients and had 2,835 patient visits; in person and through telemedicine.

With the exception of a few full and part-time employees, all medical care and office support is provided by volunteers. More than 80 volunteers are active at the clinic. Many kind and skilled doctors, dentists, and medical specialists in the community treat clinic patients without charge.
